There have been plenty of updates flowing at the moment mostly due to the lovely weather we have been experiencing recently and today is no exception with the bonus of bringing you a brand new location you haven’t seen here before and its a pretty good one I think!

First up as the forecast was wall to wall sunshine I thought I would try the early morning shot at Radley as it is one on my favourites although you have to wait until the clocks change to be able to do it. Sunrise was 06:21 today and my target working was due about 07:00 so the sun was still very low when 66124 appeared around the curves with the 4E69 Southampton -Wakefield Intermodal catching the early morning rays.

Next up is a new shot I have been wanting to try and find for a while and the guaranteed sunshine made a good excuse to try. I had first seen the shot on Martin Loaders website and really liked it so after studying the OS maps I worked out where I thought the shot was taken and head of Tackley. I found the location as I had guessed and a very nice shot it is and I bagged a lovely shot of 66504 working the 4O14 Birch Coppice – Southampton thru the cutting just North of Tackley.

The final shot of the day should have appeared last week as I went out to photograph it but the weather didn’t play ball but as I saw the same working was running again this week I thought I’d have another bash. I don’t have many photos of the Freightliner Heavy Haul aggregates workings that ply the Thames Valley so it was nice to bag 66620 working the 6V60 Angerstein – Cardiff Pengam empties at Baulking.

Saturday 21st March 2009

It looks like I messed up with my week off as the sun blazed everyday this week while I was back at work and I missed out on a decent shot of the Colas 47s on the trial steel flow out of Burton-on-Trent which was a shame. I was also working the Saturday morning which was a unfortunate as again the weather was good and a tug had dropped onto the Theale tanks!

It didn’t get much better when I noted it running about 20 minutes early through Tilehurst and I was still at work for another 20 minutes. I got in my car and headed straight for Baulking in the hope it might get looped at Challow for it’s booked path, luckily it was slowed in the Didcot area and I managed to the above shot as 60054 hammered the empty 6B33 Theale – Margam down the GWML!

Friday 6th April 2007

The Easter weekend usually enables Network Rail and Co. to carry out a large amount of engineering works due to the long break and this year the major project was Basinstoke. This meant the vast majority of freight the normally uses the Thames Valley route would have to be diverted via Swindon and Westbury. Good Friday is normally pretty good for freight with the majority running and luckily I managed to see a TOPS list for the freightliner pool before I set out.

I could see there were three liners still due South so I first set off for Didcot North to try and phot 66505 which was heading the 4O14 Garston – Southampton working. Luckily it was reported futher North so I did not have long before the Fred appeared crawling along due to the need to take the West curve at Didcot and then on towards Swindon.

I then set off westwards trying to find a location for the second liner, I had plenty of time to wait so I tried a few shots before settling on the bridge at Shrivenham. I was nearly caught out as it came into view I was still walking up to the bridge and hade to make a mad dash to get the camera out of the bag and phot 66572 working the ‘Fresh Air Express’ 4O54 Leeds – Southampton with not a single container onboard.

I wanted to find a new shot for the final liner as I seem to keep coming to Shrivenham lately so I decided to go for the shot at Baulking which I have visited before but never photographed. I bagged the final shot of a pristine 66580 working 4O27 Ditton – Southampton. Once the Fred had passed the place was swamped with photographers, something to do with some Kettle I think. :-)
