The sun keeps on shining so I keep going out to the line side to bag some shots and in fact it reminds me of a week I had on the S&C when I had wall to wall sunshine all week which is pretty much unheard of up there. As I have been out so much this week I am trying to mix up the locations so I don’t keep repeating the same view and I think I have been pretty successful.

I decided to start the day off out West at Uffington for my first shot. My intended target was the 4O51 Wentloog – Southampton liner which was in the hands of 66420 which is still in DRS livery but while waiting I found out it was running some two hours late! Luckily I had a backup with 66556 hauling the 4L32 Bristol – Tilbury liner which is scheduled only half an hour behind 4O51 so I did not have long to wait.

I do quite like the Class 70s so when I saw that one was heading to the coast on a liner I decided to head over to Lower Basildon on the main Thames Valley route. The bridge at Lower Basildon has just been replaced and only open a week to traffic and luckily it is not a monstrosity like the two over at Moreton cutting which means you can see over the side without steps. 70008 was doing the honours on the 4O49 Crewe Basford Hall – Southampton liner with a lengthy load today.

After the 70 I made a brisk drive back West to the other side of Didcot for the highlight of the day the Theale tanks. I opted for the shot at Grove as I hadn’t been here for a while and had a pleasant wait in the spring sunshine but didn’t have long to wait until 60079 eased the 6B33 Theale – Margam empty tanks past my location and into the loop at Wantage Road.

I was bit undecided on where I should go for the final shot of the day but settled on Cholsey in the end. The daily 6O26 Hinksey – Eastleigh engineers had run approximately 2 hours late in the morning which meant the return 6V27 Eastleigh – Hinksey would be returning at a much better time for the shot at Cholsey. As an added bonus it had a pair of sheds at the head of today’s working with 66135/037 in charge.

After yesterdays failure to photograph the Class 70 on the Wentloog diagram today my luck would turn as overnight I had seen that 70003 was allocated to Fridays working. I decided to try the shot at Lower Basildon as I don’t venture down here very often so thought it would make a nice change of location.

It seems the Class 70 is still a draw at the moment as the novelty hasn’t worn off yet as a couple of photters were also on site when I arrived or maybe it was just the good weather finally bring people out. I didn’t have long to wait and running bang on time 70003 eased the 4O51 Wentloog – Southampton liner up the relief. I would still like to hear one of the class under full bore for myself as I have been told they sound quite good.

After bagging Betty at Lower Basildon I decided to try the shot at Purley on Thames but its still a bit too early in the year for the shot with shadows covering the cutting so I ended up heading back to spend the afternoon at Cholsey. It appears the Freds seems to stick to the same working as I bagged a second shot of 66592 again working the 4O27 Garston – Southampton liner.

Next up was a working I have only seen once before and never appeared on this site, the Network Measurement Train. It has never seem to have matched up to my time off work before and its schedule isn’t that great however today it all fitted into place. Running down the relief on this occasion the ‘Flying Banana’ as it is affectionately known worked the 1Z21 London Paddington – Derby RTC slowly through the Oxfordshire countryside.

Last up was a new working to the Thames Valley and the inaugural working had been the previous day which I did indeed photograph but I wanted the share the shots out over the two days and I preferred Fridays view anyway. DBS has won a new steel flow from Holland to Troste in Wales where upon the following day it heads to Llanwern before on the third day it heads back home on the 6Z14 Llanwern – Dollands Moor for onward transit through the tunnel to Holland. 66051 had charge of today’s working of 20 IHAs and 1623 tonnes in tow it was certainly giving the shed a good workout as it was struggling to get the train up to speed after its stop at Didcot.

Saturday 3rd March 2007

I have something a bit unusual for you today, earlier in the week DRS 66419 was hired in by Freightliner for a two week spell and immediately made its debut by working to Southampton. It did a couple of workings to and from the port during the week and I was hoping it might put in an appearance when I had some free time and luckily enough it did!

I had been at work during the morning and as the weather was good I decided to check the email straight away to see if anything was happening, good job I did as I found out 66419 was working 4O02 Lawley Street – Southampton which was due in the Didcot area around 2pm. I decided to try my luck at Lower Basildon and within 5 minutes of arriving the Dred came belting through on the relief running over half an hour early! :o
