This is my final update from my Settle & Carlisle trip. I’m starting this update with the location that provided the most difficult to get a photo of that I was happy with. The location was Waitby and I attemped this shot on three occasions and finally on the final day I bagged it. The first attempt was my day of arrival and the weather was poor so I ditched that one, the next attempt no trains turned up during the time I was there and finally I got the shot on my final day of 66159 passing Waitby with 6S69 Gascoinge Wood – New Cummnock.

We will move back to Ribblehead for the next photo and a slighty different view to the standard Ribblehead shot. If you look back to my shot of 66193 in Part 3 which shows the view overlooking the station, well it was when I was looking for a location that day I saw a bridge furthur south which I came back to again to photograph the same working but this time with 66133 at the helm of 4M52 West Burton – Newbiggin.

I mentioned above that it took 3 attempts to get a shot from Waitby, well the GBRF gypsum that heads south in the evening was photographed every day partly due to the fact it was a nice change from the EWS red and gold but also it was the only thing to photograph for a couple of hours. One evening I was waiting for it at Garsdale and it was held at the signal for about 20 minutes giving me ample time to walk down the field and grab a nice shot of 66709 in cracking evening light!

Now we come to my final shot of the trip and my favourite location I visited during the week. It took some effort to get the shot but it was well worth it. The final view is of Arten Gill Viaduct one of the most impressive viaducts on the route. I went up the hill completley the wrong way as I had to then scramble down into the river at the base of the viaduct and then up the near vertical slope the other side. It was only on my way back down I saw a tack leading down the other side of the river which would have been much easier. Anyway it was well worth the effort to photograph 66171 with 6E64 Chalmerston -Drax heading south over the viaduct.

I had a fantastic week on the S&C with superb weather enabling me to get plenty of photos I was very pleased with. I will definitely be making a return visit in the future to visit some of my favourite locations from my trip and also attempt shots that I never had time to do. On a final note I would highly recommend any rail enthuiast visits this stunning part of our country!

Greetings as I continue the updates from my Settle & Carlisle holiday and I have another bunch of photos for you to view. I will start this update at Ribblehead. I hadn’t planned to do this shot but one morning as I was driving past the viaduct enroute to another shot I realised the sun was good for the other side of the viaduct and luckily there is was a southbound coal working to make the shot possible, here we see 66217 working 6E64 Chalmerston – Drax across the viaduct.

Sticking with Ribblehead for the next shot I explored the locations to the south of the station and found a couple of bridges that crossed the line and opted for the the first bridge south of Ribblehead to capture 66193 on 4M52 West Burton – Newbiggin and you can just see the viaduct in the background.

We are heading north along the S&C to Dent for my next shot, I had seen this shot on the web and quite liked it due to the nice tunnel entrance in the background and the hillside covered in trees which is not the usual S&C backdrop. There are a couple of workings which fit this location ideally and I photographed 66523 cruising out of Rise Hill tunnel with 6E73 Hunterston – Ferrybridge.

The GBRF hauled Gypmsum working was one of my main target workings as it breaks up the mainly EWS hauled workings with a bit of colour. The evening southbound working is quite tricky to find a good location for and one of the few locations possible is Garsdale. 66709 found itself on this working all week and is seen departing Garsdale with 4E16 Newbiggin – Doncaster.

Join me again soon as I post my final shots from my final update from my Settle & Carlisle photo trip.

Welcome to a delayed part 2 of my Settle & Carlisle week, I wanted to visit as many different locations as possible during my week up on the S&C and I think I only shot the same location twice on one occasion as the are just so many options for photos up there. Lets get straight back to the action.

I wanted to do the shot at Dandry Mire viaduct and got out there one morning and I was running late for the two southbound coal trains. I think I put too much effort into legging it across the field and halfway up the hill as I was on the verge of being ill so I rested at the end of Garsdale sidings. The first working was missed as my camera had been left on self timer so I wasn’t impressed after the mad dash over the field, luckily the second working was only 20 mins behind so I grabbed a shot of 66144 heading south with 6E77 Hunterston – Drax.

Due up next was a northbound Freightliner Heavy Haul working. The hillside is quite overgrown where it overlooks Garsdale blocking most of the view but I managed to find a shot standing on the old Hawes brach trackbed and with the addition on my 200mm plus teleconvertor I found a shot. Here we see 66550 heading north on 4S11 Drax – Killoch through Garsdale station.

For the next shot we head North only a couple of miles to Ais Gill summit. The location is a peice of cake to get to as there is an area of waste ground just off the road with plenty of space to park. In fact if you parked at the right angle you could probably take a shot sitting in you car its that close! First up we have 66217 heading north with 6S69 Gasgoigne Wood – New Cummnock seen here having just crested Ais Gill summit.

The final shot from this upate is also from Ais Gill but a bit furthur into the field you can see in the shot above. I was quite pleased to photograph this Gypsum working as it runs as required and the lighting was superb on the evening I was there. Here we see an immaculate 66712 coasting down the summit on 4M91 West Burton – Newbiggin.

Check back soon for part 3 as I still have plenty more photos to display from my week on the S&C, also I will try and upload part 3 a bit quicker than I did this update, fingers crossed…
